Water saving initiatives
Freshwater is a limited resource that, as Australians, we tend to take for granted.

While we are lucky enough to have easy access to freshwater right now, this may not be the case in the future and although there are alternative sources of water, they take an environmental toll that we can’t really afford.

Luckily enough there are a number of things that you can do in your home to reduce your water and energy use to the point where you’ll actually end up saving money, and help the planet at the same time.

One of the easiest things you can do is making sure you get any leaks in your home repaired right away. Water leaks can not only cause serious damage to your home, a small leak can increase your bill substantially. Did you know a leaking toilet can waste up to 25 litres of water per day?

Another great water saving initiative is having water efficient fixtures and appliances installed. Next time you’re looking for a washing machine, hot water system or dishwasher, make sure you look at its energy and water efficiency rating before you buy which is the blue or red star rating sticker.

A quick & easy water saving initiative is to contact your plumber to look at changing your taps and shower heads to ones that are water smart and will reduce the amount of hot water you need to use.

There are all sorts of new technologies helping us reduce water consumption and waste, but one of the best things you can do is simply make some small adjustments to your behaviour.

Things like turning off the tap while you brush your teeth, choosing native plants for your garden, using a pool cover to avoid water evaporation or not turning on your dishwasher until it is completely full can all add up to big water reduction and big savings.

There are so many ways that you can help conserve water and even if you just start with one change, you will be making a difference. Not everyone is as lucky as we are to have fresh, clean water at our fingertips.

Be thankful, be smart and do what you can to reduce your water use.
